George W. Watts Elementary School is located in the eastern section of Wilcox County, town of Pine Apple, Alabama. The school was previously named after one of Wilcox County's School District Superintendents, Mr. William J. Jones. After the Wilcox County School System revamped, the school was renamed after Professor George W. Watts. Professor Watts was an African American Professor in Wilcox County and actually purchased land for a school in the Pine Apple area for African American students. Professor Watts built the 1st African American school (Pine Apple Senior High) in Pine Apple, Alabama, after teaching several years in Arkadelphia Baptist Church. G.W. Watts Elementary is a K-5 public school and apart of the Wilcox County Board of Education. G.W. Watts Elementary houses approximately 70 students. Due to the enrollment status, state funding was cut, thus creating combination classes. Therefore, combination classes consist of joining grades K-1; 2-3; and 4-5. We are proud of the fact that our school has never received school improvement status and maintains its' AYP status. In addition, the school is apart of the Alabama Reading Initiative and has a Reading Coach assisting teachers and students. The library system (automation) is currently a Web-based library-the first within the Wilcox County School System. Our school colors are red and white and the team's mascot is the Mighty Mustang. The teachers and administration are committed to Professor George Watts' vision of educating students and are dedicated to ensuring the success of the students and school. GO MUSTANGS!!!
